Timeline for Brand Pages on Facebook

Check out this piece of news:
Facebook Timeline Brand Pages Are Here [PICS]
Now not only personal profiles, brand pages could use Timeline too, even with extra functions. The article explains a question which has been haunting me since the first time I saw Timeline: the goal of Timeline-- is to create identities. Individuals need identities, so do organizations. Then a new question come to my mind: will Renren (a Chinese website just like Facebook) apply the mode of Timeline someday?

A Big Meal of Google Mobile Apps

Frequently-used Google tools for me are Google search, Google map, Google Chrome, Google Plus and Blogger. I also tried Google Calendar, Google Docs and iGoogle on my computer. They all work well, just as expected. But to me, the most amazing thing actually is to discover Google apps on mobile.

I downloaded Google Latitude, Google Earth and Google Shopper for trial. While Google Latitude shares a similar check-in function as Foursquare and Google Earth’s function is not fresh things to me, I found Google Shopper kind of interesting and attractive. If you use your camera on your phone to scan the cover of a book, CD, DVD or video game, it could help you find the product simply. Also, you could find a product by barcode scanning or voice search. In addition to finding a product, the app could look for local stores or websites who are selling this product and provide the prices, so you could find the best price for this product. This app also provides today’s offer and nearby offers. I think the concept of this app is awesome, but when I tried this app for some products, it somehow provides the wrong message about the product name. Perhaps the technology for this app needs to be better improved.

Another app I found interesting is called G-whizz, like a Google apps browser. Within just one app, you could enjoy a plenty of Google tools, including Gmail, Picasa, Youtube, Reader, Calender, etc—which is fantastic!

See what G-whizz has:

On the Way to Drive New Media

Finally I've got the time to read that book-- The new media driver's license. That's because there's no wifi in Brody today, and I have nothing to do except reading that book.

It's very easy to be absorbed in reading it since the content focuses on new media varying from blogging to social networking, Google, online public relations, internet marketing, SEO and SEM which are all attractive things to me. I felt myself like a future driver of new media while reading the book. After reading it, I felt a strong eager to try some new social media tools. So I spent almost the whole afternoon wandering among Google's various products (calendar, latitude, shopper, etc), Tumblr, Scoop.it, Delicious, and other similar products -- totally a huge feast of social media! I felt a little bit lost.

Then I read the article of 4 easy steps to avoid social media overload online, which suggests that in order to focus better among various social media, marketers or PR personnels should consider their top social media goals, how much time could be dedicated each day, what type to tool could be used to help save time and such questions.

I'm just a green hand now, wandering around the maze of social media. And I’ve realized that a good driver of new media should know how to use these various kinds of media tools efficiently and wisely to target different people, at the same time without lacking a focus. I'm still on the way there.

API without National Boundries

English websites in U.S. normally have API provided by Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumbler, Youtube, etc, just like some Chinese websites in China would have API of Renren, Weibo, Youku, Tudou, etc ---- although not so popular as in U.S.

I'm just wondering if one day we could have borderless API ---- with no national boundries! Thus I could share things interesting on U.S. websites directly through Chinese social networking websites like Weibo. After all, no boundries ---- is the essence of Internet, isn't it?

Pinterest & Topit

After I started using Pinterest, I found it kinda similar with Topit--a Chinese version of Pinterest I used when I'm in China. Their mottoes are similar too--"Pin it" and "Top it".

Firstly, I do like the interface of Pinterest better. It looks more concise and it's much easier to handle with all its functions.

Another thing that makes Pinterest better is that it's connected with Facebook and Twitter, so that we can easily share our update on Pinterest to our friends in social media, even if they don't join Pinterest. That could somehow explain why Topit is not that well-known among a large amount of internet users, however Pinterest has been popping up among a large user base so quickly and became one of the top 10 social networks. So the connection and cooperation with other social networks should be a key factor in the success of a new social network.

One more thing we should consider is the revenue approaches for this kind of digital bookmarking tools. My impression towards Topit is that this website is full of artsy-fartsy, little connection with marketing or retailing. However, Pinterest is beginning making money from pins! It also has some other practical use, like people use their portfolio on Pinterest to find a job, make plans for their wedding and such things. All these functions make Pinterest a social network with practical use.

And I think these are the areas where Chinese social networking websites could learn from and make improvements.

The New Science of Viral Ads - Harvard Business Review

The New Science of Viral Ads - Harvard Business Review

I have one question:

Even if an ad successfully creates the hook and catches the attention of viewers, but since people always have to watch the same ad for more than one time from TV, how could those viewers, after watching the ad for dozens of times, still feel interested rather than impatient when they already know where the punch line is? Or maybe some day we should make the ad campaign into a series of stories?

Emotional ad from MADD: Stick Family Crash

Check the video and printer ads from MADD:

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Edmonton & Area: Stick Family Crash

 Stick Family Wheelchair

Stick Family Jail

Stick Family Grave

Ads for social good may get inspirations from this ad:
one is using animations instead of real people so that the tragic scene may look less horrible;
two is looking at things from a new angle. This ad shifts away from the severe consequence that may happen to the drunk drivers themselves, but focuses on how their family may be affected by their careless driving-- that is really a different way to appeal to our emotional feelings.

The Lovemarks Company - Saatchi & Saatchi Prague Launches Valentine’s Campaign for Milka

The Lovemarks Company - Saatchi & Saatchi Prague Launches Valentine’s Campaign for Milka

very funny, hah?
To see how much you could do for the one you love.
Making promises is easy.
Do it?
A man would love his girl friend more than games?
Or a girl would never ask his boy friend to go shopping with her?
Guess...

The world hears Pete Hoekstra

Not just M.I.A.: Super Bowl political ad using Asian woman decried

Guest commentary: Hoekstra's embarrassing ad is heard loud and clear in China

Speeches that are protected: political, racial, commercial.

That's why you should always be careful when you're saying about those stuffs.

And never overlook the power of social media----

Things spread so fast with social media!

The Time of SoLoMo Has Came

Check this article.
Mobile, Local are Key Factors in Facebook's Post-IPO Revenue Growth
It seems that the future revenue of Facebook after its first public offerings may come from solomo=social+location+mobile. It is true that location-based service has gained a rapid use, but how to use LBS to make money should be a question for new marketers.

A smart campaign of Shazam in Super Bowl 2012

A smart campaign: Use Shazam for the Super Bowl!

I would say this is a smart campaign of Shazam. Apart from recognizing a song, it now could tag an advertisement! I bet one day it could recognize a film, tv drama, and any acoustic information you could think of.

The good thing for us is that we could gain a chance to get big prizes, special offers and exclusive content. The good thing for Shazam? You bet!

See this Ad: A Roof for my Country

This is an ad by Y&R, Peru. The ad copy says, "Someone dreams of the roof on which you dream." I could tell it shows a contrast and seems interesting, but couldn't get the exact meaning. Can you?
